Proper skis and boots are imperative in order to best ensure maximum enjoyment of the sport. Boots should be flexible, low cut and appropriate for this age and performance group. A 3 to 4 buckle conventional entry boot is usually the best choice. Consider your child’s size and ability carefully before choosing the boot. A model or two down from the “top of the line racing boot” may be the most appropriate. Skis selected for the individual will vary in length and model according to ability. Check with coaches and knowledgeable shops for advice. Skis that are slightly shorter are better than skis that are too long.
Skis should be kept in good condition at all times. Skis that are allowed to deteriorate, then tuned on race day, do not offer the consistency needed to promote confidence.
For our racers Slalom gear may or may not be necessary. As athletes are able to make contact with slalom gates protective gear (shin and hand guards) may be necessary to allow good technique and no hesitation. Most of our athletes will wear GS (speed suits) for racing. Please be sure the suits are warm and allow adequate layers to be worn under the suit for warmth. A cold athlete is a slow and an unhappy athlete.
